A Chicana artivista (artist/activist), feminist music theorist and academic, Martha is assistant professor of Chicana/ Latina/ Studies at SCRIPPS / Claremont College, having earned a PhD in Feminism from the U. of Washington/Seattle, and a BA in Ethnomusicology, UCLA. Among numerous awards and honors, she received a Fulbright Garcia-Robles Fellowship (2007-08) for her research on transnational musical social movements across the Americas and Europe, with a specific focus on innovations of women in the music and dance of the fandango culture. Recognized as an accomplished sonero, one who has to play various instruments within the tradition, as well as to sing and dance (zapateado), he then began teaching both in Mexico and in the US.
Creator of FandangObon’s ofrenda (altar), has lived in East Los Angeles her entire life and comes to her craft through “beyond three generations of women – from my mother to my great-great mother”. A pioneer in the Chicano Movement, she brought Chicano cultural pride and understanding to school children when she began her teaching career in East Los Angeles in 1974.

Associate Producer of FandangObon. Xochi is an active member of the LA Chicano arts community and a skilled activist and organizer who has worked with the Black and Japanese communities as well. She co-founded the transnational dialogue between Chicana/os in Los Angeles and Jarocha/os in Veracruz in 2003, a project that has since taken root in every region of the US.
Shamisen player, dancer, and writer. A fourth-generation Japanese American Canadian from Vancouver, he grew up in Seattle, Maryland, New Jersey, and now Los Angeles. He is the co-curator for a free public art series, Tuesday Night Café, in Los Angeles’s Little Tokyo neighborhood, and a member of the dance crew Ninjas for Social Justice.
